Welcome to the Canine Magic autism program of East Coast Assistance Dogs, inc. (ECAD), a New York area based not-for-profit organization, where dogs prove time and again that they are indeed man’s best friends.

For nearly 70 years, specially-trained dogs have assisted blind people, giving them an independence that was never before possible. An increasing number of people with physical disabilities are getting the same kind of help from service dogs trained to lend a “helping paw” in completing everyday tasks.

Canine Magic focuses on training dogs to assist children with autism in a variety of areas, including emotional bonding, socialization support, cognitive development, and physical safety. Recent studies have shown that training service dogs for children with autism can dramatically improve the quality of life of these children and their families.

Because this program is donation-supported, raising funds to support Canine Magic is an integral part of enriching the lives of children with autism and their families. We are always in need of efficient help behind the scenes in many areas. As a volunteer, there are many exciting opportunities at ECAD:

  • Public Relations Help us spread the word and mission of Canine Magic
  • Event Organizers and Fundraisers Help to fund the program so no family is turned away
  • Dog SocializersOpen your home to our special dogs on weekends to socialize them and teach them house manners
  • Editors/WritersWrite stories of our clients for newsletters and press coverage
  • CaseworkersKeep a relationship with our families with service dogs to provide support and troubleshooting assistance
  • Teacher AidesAssist in the classroom and work directly with our at-risk teen dog trainers

These are just a few possibilities. If you feel that you may be of assistance in any other capacity, please let us know. Ideas to develop and promote this program are always welcome.
